Cyberbullying scheme uncovered in Karaganda: more than 2,000 SIM cards seized

As a result of operational search measures conducted by the Department for Combating Cybercrime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Police Department of the Karaganda region, a 22-year-old citizen of one of the neighboring countries was detained. He is suspected of unlawfully changing the identification codes of cellular subscriber devices for the subsequent deception of citizens.
During the search, special equipment disguised as a sound amplifier was seized. It was used to make calls to citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan on behalf of bank employees and law enforcement agencies in order to mislead and carry out fraudulent activities.
They were found in the detainee's rented apartment:
• More than 2,100 SIM cards,
• two laptops,
• Two mobile phones,
• Tablet.
It was established that calls were made to citizens from 48 subscriber numbers associated with the seized equipment. The detainee's involvement in other episodes of fraud is currently being investigated.
A criminal case has been opened on this fact. The detainee, in agreement with the prosecutor's office, was arrested. The investigation is ongoing.
