Today in Baku, within the framework of the UN Climate Change Conference COP29, Vice Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan Sungat Yessimkhanov took part in an event to promote efforts to triple the use of nuclear energy. During the event, prospects for cooperation in the field of sustainable development and transition to low-carbon energy were discussed.
Kazakhstan has joined the international initiative to triple nuclear energy by 2050. This initiative, outlined in the Declaration on Expanding the Use of Nuclear Energy, aims to accelerate the decarbonization of the global economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions as part of the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
This Declaration underlines the importance of applying the achievements of nuclear science and technology to contribute to monitoring climate change and combating its consequences. An assessment conducted by the International Energy Agency indicates a more than twofold increase in nuclear energy between 2020 and 2050 under global zero-emission scenarios by 2050 and shows that reducing nuclear energy will make achieving zero emissions more difficult and expensive. 25 States have already joined this Declaration. Meanwhile, during the first global review under the Paris Agreement, nuclear energy was recognized as one of the key solutions helping to achieve the goal of maintaining a maximum temperature increase of 1.5 degrees.
For reference: 25 States joined the declaration (Armenia, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Ghana, Hungary, Jamaica, South Korea, Moldova, Mongolia, Morocco, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America)
Kazakhstan's accession to the Declaration demonstrates its commitment to the goals of sustainable development and its desire to make a significant contribution to the fight against climate change. Nuclear energy is considered as one of the key components of Kazakhstan's energy balance, which will allow the country to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, increase the share of clean energy sources and ensure reliable energy supply.
Kazakhstan intends to actively participate in international efforts to develop peaceful nuclear energy and is ready to expand cooperation with the world's leading states and organizations in this area.
