Almaty puppet theater wins Grand Prix at International Festival in Canada

The State Puppet Theater of Kazakhstan made a breakthrough on the world stage by winning the Grand Prix, the main award of the competition, at the International Puppet Festival in Ottawa in 2024. In addition, the Kazakh theater was awarded the "Best Director" nomination by the jury in Batumi and received a special diploma in Belarus (Grodno). "This victory is the result of the tremendous work of the theater team. We are glad that our art has risen to the world level and is admired not only by Kazakhstani viewers, but also by foreign citizens," - noted Almat Amangeldy.

The State Puppet Theater not only actively tours abroad, but also turns the city of Almaty into a center of international cooperation.
In 2023, the theater held the I International Puppet Theater Festival "Almaty Puppet Festival", which was highly praised by critics. In 2024, the festival brought together collectives from Poland, Georgia, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Russia, Bashkortostan and Kazakhstan for the second time.
"Our festival occupies an important place on the map of world theater art. "We want Almaty to become a gathering place for the best puppet theaters from all over the world," noted Almat Amangeldy.
In 2024, the theater presented five popular premieres that were loved by the audience:
1) The patriotic performance "Champion", which glorifies the courageous spirit of the famous boxer, Olympic champion Bekzat Sattarkhanov;
2) The performance "Puss in Boots", which tells about the power of reason and friendship, staged on the basis of a world-famous fairy tale;
3) The performance "With a Threshold", which is about distrust, bullying, and bullying in society, staged under the direction of a Georgian director;
4) The concert performance "Star Puppets", which demonstrates the unique abilities of famous art stars in puppetry;
5) The "Snow Queen", which tells about brotherhood and kindness, staged on the basis of a world-famous fairy tale performance.
“We will stage performances that will not only give children and adolescents a good mood, but also teach them important life values,” the theater director noted.
In addition, the theater will stage a production of “Macbeth,” based on William Shakespeare’s famous play, in the cities of Batumi, Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Borjomi, and Akhaltsikhe in Georgia in 2024. Illusion" was presented to theatergoers during a tour, attracting more than 1,000 Georgian spectators.
