Today, a new cardiac surgery department was opened in Shymkent on the basis of the Children's City Clinical Hospital.
Given the large number of children in the city, the opening of the department will reduce the waiting time for operations and increase the availability of care for children with complex diagnoses from nearby regions.
Today, 500 thousand children live in Shymkent, of which 1,400 are registered with the dispensary with heart defects. This year, 67 children underwent surgery, 43 children need urgent surgical correction.
The Ministry of Health approved the "Roadmap for Improving Pediatric Cardiac Surgical Care for 2024-2026", aimed at training qualified specialists, opening new departments, and developing clinical protocols in 2024. We must strive for every child who needs heart surgery or other types of medical care to receive it in a timely and full manner,” noted Minister of Health Akmaral Alnazarova in her welcoming speech to the participants of the International Conference on Cardiac Surgery and Related Services, which opened today in Shymkent.
It is planned to create interregional pediatric cardiac surgery centers on the basis of the Aktobe and Turkestan regional children's hospitals. Today, pediatric cardiac surgery is provided in 10 departments of 6 regions of the country, and at the regional level in the Aktobe, Turkestan and Karaganda regional children's hospitals.
Kazakhstan is the only country in Central Asia where cardiac surgery is performed from birth. In 2024, 2,474 operations were performed in the republic, including 317 on newborns. Half of all operations are for children under one year old.
By introducing advanced technologies, including the creation of a pulmonary artery neovalve from the right atrial appendage, our specialists are successfully solving the most difficult cases, such as tetralogy of Fallot and pulmonary atresia. This year, 23 such operations were performed.
Specialists from the Republic of Belarus, Uzbekistan, the Russian Federation, Kyrgyzstan, scientific and republican centers, and practicing doctors will participate in the work of the international conference.
A master class will be held as part of the forum on the basis of the city children's clinical hospital, where today, after training human resources and purchasing medical equipment and medical products, a cardiac surgery department with its own cardioresuscitation and operating block will be opened.
