November 14 - World Diabetes Day is officially enshrined in the UN International Calendar and established in honor of scientist Frederick Bunting, who discovered insulin.
This year, this date is celebrated under the theme "Overcoming barriers, closing gaps", which emphasizes the need for equal access to treatment and support for people with diabetes.
According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), there are over 500 million people with diabetes worldwide.
As of October 1 of this year, over 516,564 residents with diabetes were registered in Kazakhstan, of which 92.4% or 486,853 are type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes was diagnosed in 29,711 Kazakhstanis.
Diabetes is not just a disease, but a serious threat to health that can lead to disability and even death, can cause a number of serious complications, including blindness, kidney failure, cardiovascular diseases, amputation of the lower extremities.
Previously, this disease was typical for adults, now it is more common among children and adolescents due to lifestyle factors.
Within the framework of the National Screening Program in Kazakhstan, about 1.6 million people are screened annually for early detection of diabetes mellitus, while 10% show signs of hyperglycemia.
In Kazakhstan, all patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus receive free treatment, consulting and diagnostic services, and are under constant medical supervision. They are also fully provided with a wide range of medicines from 46 names, including 20 names of insulin and 14 types of medical devices.
If indicated, patients receive the necessary inpatient care, where 56933 patients with diabetes mellitus were treated last year.
Prevention is the best way to avoid the serious consequences of diabetes. To prevent type 2 diabetes and its complications, it is strongly recommended to maintain a normal body weight, engage in daily physical activity for at least 30 minutes, adhere to a healthy diet, reducing sugar and saturated fat intake, and completely give up smoking.
