KBTU HAS OPENED THE FIRST RESEARCH CENTER FOR ENHANCED OIL RECOVERY
In Almaty, the A.B.Bekturov Institute of Chemical Sciences hosted the grand opening of the Kazakh-Chinese Joint Research Center for enhanced oil recovery and a laboratory sponsored by the Chinese company Xinjiang Keli New Technology Company. The event was organized by the School of Energy and Oil and Gas Industry of the Kazakh-British Technical University.
KBTU Rector Maratbek Gabdullin made a welcoming speech. In his address, he stressed the importance of this center for the development of the oil and gas industry: "First of all, I want to express my gratitude to Xinjiang Keli New Technology Company for the opportunity. During the year, we actively discussed plans to expand the KBTU laboratory base, and today's project was an important step in this direction. This initiative is particularly significant because it meets the challenges of developing complex deposits that require the introduction of advanced technologies. Moreover, this project contributes to the implementation of the strategy of our leaders – President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping – "One Belt, one Road", strengthening cooperation and opening new horizons for joint development."
The main direction of the center's work is the development and research of various technologies that allow solving problems related to increasing oil recovery. Among them is the use of chemical agents for difficult reservoir conditions of oil fields in Kazakhstan. Special attention is paid to heavy oil extraction technologies, the creation of functional gel particles, optimization of well performance and prevention of blockage of CO₂ channels.
Mr. Zhao Bo, President of Xinjiang Keli New Technology Company, stressed that this project will become the basis for new opportunities within the framework of bilateral cooperation: "Today, Xinjiang Keli New Technology Company, together with KBTU, opened a laboratory within the framework of the research center for enhanced oil recovery. This is our first laboratory opened in Kazakhstan. In the future, we hope to open new laboratories, as well as to continue cooperation with KBTU in other projects."
One of the key advantages of the laboratory is the use of modern equipment and software to train world-class specialists. For example, the CNGTX700 rotating droplet interfacial tensiometer is an advanced instrument combining high measurement accuracy, wide applicability and ease of operation. It is specially designed to measure the surface tension of various chemical water-soluble agents, the interfacial tension of water and oil, as well as the viscoelastic properties of surface tension.
In addition, the research center is equipped with experimental devices for physical modeling of oil displacement and determination of the oil recovery coefficient (KIN) using various types of water-soluble agents at high temperature and pressure. The center also has an installation for measuring core permeability, a high-temperature mixer for mixing water-soluble agents with crude oil and a high-temperature cabinet for studying their emulsifying properties.
