Kazakh-Chinese cooperation in the field of energy was discussed in Astana

On November 28, 2024, Astana hosted the 13th meeting of the Kazakh-Chinese Subcommittee on Energy Cooperation. The meeting was attended by Vice Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan A. Zhamauov, Deputy Head of the State Department of Energy of the People's Republic of China Ren Jingdong, representatives of ministries and departments of both countries, representatives of interested organizations.
During the event, prospects for the development of bilateral cooperation in key areas of energy such as renewable energy sources, electric power, oil and gas, as well as nuclear energy were discussed.
Vice Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan A. Zhamauov noted that under the leadership of the Heads of the two States, the Kazakh-Chinese strategic partnership continues to develop successfully, including in the energy sector.
"Our cooperation in the energy sector is a vivid example of successful cooperation within the framework of the One Belt, One Road initiative. It contributes to the sustainable development of both countries, strengthening energy security and creating new opportunities for our peoples," A. Zhamauov said.
Currently, Kazakhstan is implementing 26 projects in the field of renewable energy sources with the participation of Chinese companies, the total capacity of which is 1140.85 MW.
Projects for the construction of a combined cycle gas plant with a capacity of 160 MW at the site of MAEK LLP were discussed.
In the field of oil transportation, work continues on the expansion of the Kazakhstan-China oil pipeline, including the Atyrau-Kenkiyak and Kenkiyak-Kumkol sections.
In addition, cooperation in the gas sector is successfully developing. Kazakhstan continues to export natural gas to China through the Central Asia–China gas pipeline, strengthening the energy security of the region. Kazakhstan also plays an important role in the transit of gas from Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to China.
The parties also discussed further prospects for cooperation in the field of nuclear energy. In particular, the possibility was discussed
expanding the transit of natural uranium through the territory of the People's Republic of China to third countries.
The Kazakh side welcomed the initiative of the Chinese side to hold the China–Central Asia Energy Cooperation Forum.
Following the results of the event, an agreement was reached to hold the 14th meeting of the Subcommittee on Energy Cooperation in the Territory of the People's Republic of China in 2025.
