For the first time, transplant doctors at the University Medical Center performed liver transplantation from related donors to two small, low-weight patients aged 8 and 12 months.
* The peculiarity of such operations is decompensated liver failure, an extremely severe unstable condition.
Liver transplantation in low-weight patients was performed as part of a master class with the invitation of a leading transplant surgeon and intensive care specialist from the National Center for Child Health and Development (Japan).
During the master class, more than 25 medical specialists and residents were trained with the support of the Kazakhstan Khalkyna Public Foundation.
For patients with severe liver failure, the only chance to save a life is a donor organ transplant.
According to the Republican Coordination Center for Transplantation, since 2012, more than 500 liver transplants have been performed in the Republic of Kazakhstan, including 20 liver transplants to children at the Center for Motherhood and Childhood of the University Medical Center.
According to the working data of the Global Observatory of Donation and Transplantation at the World Health Organization, 100,800 transplants are performed worldwide annually, of which 10,600 liver transplants, ranking 2nd in the world in frequency.
Liver disease causes two million deaths annually and is responsible for 4% of all deaths (1 out of every 25 deaths worldwide).
