There is a replenishment in the Karaganda Zoo – a family of Brazza monkeys now lives in two new enclosures. This is a gift from the zoological park of the city of Khleby (Czech Republic).
A pair of wallabies was also purchased at the Czech zoo. These are kangaroo relatives, but of a smaller size.
The animals are albinos, which is very rare in nature.
The Brazza monkeys arrived at our zoo at the end of October. The family has a sexually mature male and two females, as well as a baby. Monkeys of this breed are supporters of patriarchy.
– There have never been such monkeys in the Karaganda Zoo. Now they live in two specially prepared enclosures. There are all kinds of shelves, ladders, swings. We built a house for them, we want to make a hammock," Gulnara Adambekova, director of the zoo, shares her plans. – These are omnivorous monkeys. They eat seeds, nuts, seasonal fruits, bananas, oranges. They like the pumpkin and zucchini that we have grown in the zoo garden. We feed them with boiled meat and fish. They enjoy drinking ayran and eating cottage cheese.
Brazza monkeys were named after the French explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza, who described this species in 1876. Monkeys can imitate the sounds of other animals. Females give birth to one cub every two to three years.
Brazza monkeys are playful and carefree, which makes them an interesting object to observe and study.
