THE LARGEST STUDENT HOUSE WITH 2,656 SEATS OPENED AT ENU
The grand opening of the largest modern student house with the participation of President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev took place at the L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University. The solemn event was attended by Mayor of Astana Zhenis Kassymbek, Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan Sayasat Nurbek, Rector of ENU Yerlan Sydykov, teachers and students.
The large-scale dormitory consists of three blocks with 2,656 beds. The area of the 6-storey building is 15 thousand square meters.m. Each block has coworking areas, libraries, sports and commercial premises for convenient student accommodation. Student houses are also equipped with fire protection systems, security systems and full wi-fi coverage. It will house undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students of ENU. The building was built on the basis of a public-private partnership.
The Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Sayasat Nurbek, informed the President about the directions of providing students with dormitories and the creation of an academic hub in the country through the opening of branches of foreign universities. He stressed that the uniqueness of the student house lies in creating conditions for comfortable living for students with disabilities.
The residential block provided for this purpose takes into account all the conditions for accessibility, comfort and safety. The dormitory spaces are equipped with appropriate adapted facilities, including a convenient elevator, wide doorways and bathrooms, as well as special beds and furniture.
"A dormitory is not just a place to stay, but a full—fledged ecosystem that promotes the comprehensive development of students. Today, the newly opened ENU student complex is the largest dormitory in the history of Kazakhstan, with a capacity of 2,656 places. A special feature of this complex is the presence of a block specially adapted for students with special needs. This unit provides all the necessary conditions to ensure accessibility, comfort and safety. The design and infrastructure of the hostel are designed to create a supportive environment for inclusive students. We will continue to work on improving the infrastructure of higher education. These steps will allow us to improve the conditions for students and improve the quality of the educational process," said Minister S.Nurbek.
Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev highly appreciated the ongoing work in this area, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in the field of education and youth policy. In a conversation with students, the President called the youth the main hope of the country. He also noted significant progress in the development of digitalization and artificial intelligence in Kazakhstan, stressing that advanced technologies will be implemented in all sectors of the economy.
"Today, a significant historical event is taking place before our eyes – for the first time in Kazakhstan, such a large student dormitory is opening. We all know that the issue of providing students with dormitories has not lost its relevance for several years. The Eurasian National University, prioritizing the creation of comfortable conditions for students, has made every effort towards today's goal. The new student house solves the problem of the lack of dormitories for ENU students. This house is also unique in that it provides the most comfortable conditions for students with disabilities. In the future, we plan to continue building new student houses and create even more conditions for our students," said Yerlan Sydykov, Rector of the Eurasian National University.
According to Vice-rector for Socio-cultural Development of ENU Lyazat Tolegenkyzy, today the number of people with disabilities who want to study at ENU is increasing.
"Our university has the largest number of people with disabilities – 182 students. A barrier-free environment is being created for them, with the most convenient adaptive conditions in compliance with all requests," the vice-rector emphasized.
Lyazat Tolegenkizi reported that the distribution of students for accommodation in the new university is carried out online on the ENU digital platform.
Madiyar Sattybayev, a representative of the contracting organization, said that each block has recreational centers for students, places for parents to wait.
"For security reasons, there are Face IDs at the entrance, video cameras on the floors. There are power points on each floor. There are laundries and storage rooms on the ground floors," the speaker said.
ENU students also shared their first impressions of their new home. Ruslan Yerzhanov, a student at the History Faculty of the ENU, was pleased to note that the hostel meets international standards.
The students are scheduled to settle in the second decade of January 2025.
