Preparations for the flood period were discussed at the staff meeting of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation. Currently, free tanks are being released in the country's reservoirs.
For example, the volume of water in the Astana reservoir was reduced to 83%: from December 20, 2024 to January 03, 2025, 5.06 million cubic meters of water were discharged from it. By April 1, 2025, the Ministry plans to reduce the volume of water in the reservoir to 300 million cubic meters, or up to 73%.
About 51 million cubic meters of water remain in the Aktobe reservoir. By April 1, it is planned to reduce this volume to 47.32 million cubic meters. The volume of water in the Bitik reservoir of the West Kazakhstan region has been reduced to 34.45 million cubic meters. Today, 8.3 cubic meters of water per second are discharged from the reservoir.
The Bukhtarma reservoir in the East Kazakhstan region is 79% full. By April 1, the Ministry intends to reduce the volume of water in the reservoir by another 8%. 69 million cubic meters of water have been collected in the Yntymak reservoir of the Karaganda region. It is planned to release up to 39% of the reservoir to receive flood waters in the spring.
The volume of water in the Kangir reservoir in the Ulytau region was reduced to 86%. It is planned to release about 11% more by spring. 585.4 million cubic meters of water were collected in the Verkhne-Tobolsk reservoir of Kostanay region. According to the reservoir's operating mode, water volume is expected to decrease to 499.37 million cubic meters, or 61%, by April 1.
"In spring, it is very important not only to collect flood waters in reservoirs, but also to direct them to lake systems, natural pastures and meadows. Therefore, it is necessary to plan in advance the work on the proper distribution of water. This year, the requests of farmers and other water users were fully satisfied. About 11 billion cubic meters of water were supplied to the country's farms during the past irrigation period. In addition, a lot of work has been done to preserve and restore large and small reservoirs," said Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation.
