In 2025, the Abylkhan Kasteev State Museum of Art of the Republic of Kazakhstan celebrates a significant event — the 90th anniversary of its founding.
Today, the museum's collection includes more than 26,000 works of art reflecting the entire palette of cultural and historical heritage of Kazakhstan. It contains paintings, graphics and sculptures, including authentic masterpieces included in the golden fund of art of Kazakhstan.
A significant section is represented by the decorative and applied art of Kazakhstan - the national source of spirituality and tradition, which came from antiquity and has survived to our time.
An extensive program has been prepared for the museum's 90th anniversary, which will emphasize the rich history and versatility of its activities.
An important event will be the opening of the new hall "Contemporary Art of Kazakhstan", which will feature works by the country's leading artists.
The museum will also return to its origins by presenting a retrospective photo exhibition. Visitors will be presented with unique archival documents and photographs. Special attention will be paid to scientific, stock, exhibition, and excursion activities since 1935. Along with this, photographs of numerous exhibition projects and large-scale events that are taking place to this day will be shown. This is a story about the history, formation and development of the museum and its collection from its origins to the present day.
Another exhibition will be dedicated to the jubilee artists who entered the history of fine art in Kazakhstan.
A significant part of the anniversary program will be the publication of the two-volume catalog "Modern decorative and applied Art of Kazakhstan". The catalog will cover products made of metal, ceramics, textiles and other materials created from 1938 to the 2020s.
The exhibition "Reborn Masterpieces" will present about 100 restored works, which will be accompanied by passports with a description of the restoration work done and photographs "before" and "after". The older generation of restorers will be invited to the exhibition, who have put a lot of effort and labor into giving numerous works an expositional appearance.
The anniversary year will also be marked by a number of major international exhibitions that will strengthen Kazakhstan's cultural dialogue with the world.
The most important project of the year is intended to be a visiting exhibition of works by Abylkhan Kasteev from the Museum's collection at the State Tretyakov Gallery. It is planned to present unique works of graphics and watercolors by the master – a retrospective exhibition of 50 works will reflect all stages of the artist's creative development and present it to the Russian audience.
The international project dedicated to the 120th anniversary of Ural Tansykbayev, organized by the Cultural Development Fund of Uzbekistan, will unite the collections of leading museums in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
The international exhibition of the National Museum of China will feature over 50 works: original Chinese paintings, sculptures, composite materials, watercolors, gouache and lacquer paintings.
The Kasteev Readings, an annual international scientific and practical conference that unites art and museum researchers, will become a traditional event of the year.
