First meeting of the Joint Committee of the Kazakhstan-Japan JCM

The first meeting of the Joint Committee of the JCM (Joint Crediting Mechanism) between Kazakhstan and Japan was held today. This historic event is an important milestone in the development of bilateral cooperation against climate change.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Yerlan Nysanbayev, as well as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of Kazakhstan, Yasumasa Iijima, and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Alibek Bakayev.
The Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) is an instrument provided for in Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which is aimed at reducing the carbon footprint and promoting sustainable development through the exchange of advanced technologies and joint projects.
In 2023, Kazakhstan and Japan signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the JCM, which opened up new opportunities for Kazakhstani enterprises to attract investments and introduce modern Japanese technologies.
The meeting presented the main results of preparations for the implementation of the JCM, including:
• Approval of the Co-Chairs of the JCM Joint Committee,
• Approval of the Rules and Guidelines,
• Approval of the Secretariat and Observers of the JCM Joint Committee.
The participants also discussed promising projects in the field of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as well as the procedure for issuing carbon credits within the framework of the JCM mechanism.
The Joint Committee confirmed its readiness to further cooperate and implement projects.
