Akim of the West Kazakhstan region Nariman Toregaliev met with Andrey Vyazikov, First Deputy Chairman of the Interdepartmental Commission for the Management of Spring Floods in the Orenburg region, as part of his working visit to the Orenburg region. Representatives of the Emergency Situations Department, the Water Management Department, and Roshydromet also attended the meeting.
The main topic of the meeting was flood forecasts and interaction between the parties during the flood period. Representatives of state bodies of the Orenburg region made reports on the hydrometeorological situation in the region, measures to prepare for spring floods, and other key aspects.
“The most important natural object and the main source of drinking water and water supply for the West Kazakhstan region is the Uralsk River basin. There are 87 settlements along it, where up to 75% of the region's population lives. In addition, water is taken from the Uralsk River for the economic and drinking water needs of the city of Uralsk,” said Nariman Toregaliev.
He also noted the need to adjust the operating mode of the reservoir in accordance with the prevailing hydrological situation, taking into account the forecasts and the level of readiness of the reservoir for spring floods. This will allow maintaining the water level in the lower reaches of the Ural River at long-term averages.
The Kazakh side proposed that during low water levels, water discharge should not be lower than last year's levels.
As a result of the meeting, the parties agreed on close cooperation on flood control issues, as well as on continuous exchange of information throughout the entire period of flood activity.
