A large-scale program to vaccinate girls against the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is considered an important step in the fight against cervical cancer, is being implemented in Kazakhstan. Gulnaz Dosmyrzayeva, Deputy Head of the Astana City Public Health Department, told how immunization work is progressing in the capital at a briefing in the Communications Service, the official website of the city administration reports.
Vaccination began in September 2024, and by the end of the year, 6,091 girls received the first dose. Of these, 3,187 are 11 years old (scheduled vaccination), and 2,904 are 12-13 years old (additional immunization).
“The program continues in 2025 - in the first month, 351 girls aged 11 and 50 girls aged 12-13 were vaccinated. The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan considered using the quadrivalent vaccine “Gardasil” manufactured in the USA. It protects against the most dangerous types of human papillomavirus (HPV) 6, 11, 16 and 18. Vaccination is carried out free of charge in schools in two stages with a six-month break.
Cervical cancer is one of the most common oncological diseases among women in Kazakhstan. More than 600 Kazakhstani women die from this disease every year. Mass vaccination is a strategic step in the prevention of cancer. We are committed to ensuring the protection of the next generation of women from HPV and the associated risk of cancer,” the speaker said.
It should be noted that the vaccine provides 90-95% protection against the oncogenic form of HPV.
