Kazakhstan's efforts towards a "green" energy transformation were highly appreciated at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue

Berlin, March 18-19, 2025 - As part of the 11th Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue, Vice Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan Bakytzhan Ilyas participated as a speaker in the panel session "Green Hydrogen - Ramping up Infrastructure", where he spoke about practical measures taken by the Government of Kazakhstan to develop hydrogen energy, achieve carbon neutrality and decarbonization of important sectors of the country's economy.

"Today, hydrogen energy is considered as a strategic direction. Kazakhstan sees green hydrogen as an opportunity for energy transition, economic diversification and emission reduction. Kazakhstan is striving to balance the use of hydrogen in the country and its export, as in the future it can replace fossil fuels and support economic growth," the Vice Minister emphasized in his speech.

During the bilateral talks between the Vice Minister and Berthold Goeke, Director-General for Climate Action, German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, current issues of energy security, climate commitments under the NDC, and the close cooperation of the Kazakh Ministry of Energy with the Office of Hydrogen Diplomacy in Astana, the German Energy Agency (DENA), the GIZ and a number of large German enterprises in the field of promoting hydrogen policy.

The Kazakh delegation invited German partners to actively participate in solving current climate, environmental and water problems within the framework of the Regional Climate Summit to be held in Astana in 2026. Kazakhstan, firmly following the formula "Successful Central Asia - Successful Kazakhstan", strives to further expand cooperation within the framework of the German "Green Central Asia" initiative.

Berthold Goeke positively noted Kazakhstan's practical steps towards a "green" transformation, which is due to the attractiveness of participation in the ongoing large-scale green projects. The German diplomat assured that Germany is ready to contribute to the collective efforts aimed at implementing the climate commitments of the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals for the benefit of the Central Asian region. According to the German partners, Kazakhstan's participation in the Climate Club and its Global Matchmaking platform will strengthen the country's position on a global scale and identify leading financial and technical solutions for decarbonization of the energy industry and intensive emissions.

During the visit, a number of meetings were held with representatives of the leadership of the German Energy Agencу (DENA), H2Diplo, GIZ, as well as Siemens Energy.

The Kazakh delegation also visited H2-Leitstelle Coordination Office, established by the Federal Government to promote Germany's national hydrogen policy.

Following the events, the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan, together with the GIZ Hydrogen Diplomacy Office, outlined future plans for the implementation of the agreements reached.

Background: The Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue is a major international platform for the global energy movement, bringing together representatives of the energy community around the world, including more than 50 ministers and state secretaries, and 17,000 participants from 130 countries. This year, BETD celebrated the 11th Anniversary. This platform provides for international cooperation, exchange of experience, networking and application of technological and energy solutions.
