Training Conducted in Astana for Penitentiary System Officers on Presumption of Innocence and Prevention of Torture

 

A training session was held in the capital for officers of the Penitentiary System, focusing on key issues related to upholding the presumption of innocence, preventing torture, and ensuring protection from cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment.

 

Objectives of the Training:

  • Strengthening knowledge of international standards on the presumption of innocence and the right to freedom from torture.
  • Enhancing the effectiveness of trainers by integrating key principles of presumption of innocence and torture prevention into educational programs.
  • Developing trainers’ competencies in designing and delivering specialized training sessions within the educational institutions and facilities of the Penal System of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan.

 

Key Focus Areas:

  • Familiarizing participants with international best practices in upholding the presumption of innocence and preventing torture.
  • Studying Kazakhstan’s legal and regulatory framework on these issues.
  • Analyzing real-life case studies from judicial practice concerning human rights, the presumption of innocence, and protection from torture.
  • Refreshing knowledge on training structure and curriculum planning for effective knowledge transfer.

 

To ensure high-quality instruction, the event featured prominent speakers, including:

  • Svetlana Yakovleva, Judge of the Almaty City Court, Candidate of Legal Sciences.
  • Saparkhan Umarov, Chairman of a District Court in the Turkestan Region.
  • Bakhytzhan Sadybekov, Deputy Chairman of the Penitentiary System Committee.

 

This training provided a unique platform for participants to deepen their expertise, exchange experiences, and improve their practical skills in human rights, justice, and the prevention of torture.
