Presentation of Credentials by the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to the President of the Portuguese Republic

Lisbon, 31 March 2025 – A solemn ceremony for the presentation of Letters of Credence by His Excellency Mr Jean Galiev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan, to His Excellency Mr Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of the Portuguese Republic, took place at the historic Praça do Império, followed by a formal audience at the Belém Palace.

During the audience, the Kazakh diplomat conveyed warm greetings and best wishes on behalf of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, reaffirming Astana’s unwavering commitment to further strengthening and expanding bilateral relations.

The meeting, held in the presence of members of the Portuguese Government and the Presidential Administration, provided an opportunity to discuss the current state and future prospects of cooperation between the two nations in the political, trade and economic, as well as cultural and humanitarian domains. Particular emphasis was placed on enhancing collaboration in such key areas as investment, renewable energy, digital technologies, artificial intelligence, rare earth materials, transport and logistics, tourism, healthcare, and education.

Ambassador Galiev underscored the considerable potential for deepening bilateral ties, stressing the importance of implementing joint projects and initiatives aimed at increasing trade volumes and reinforcing economic partnerships. “Kazakhstan, which is undergoing profound political and socio-economic reforms under President Tokayev’s vision of a Just Kazakhstan, views Portugal as a trusted partner within the European Union, the United Nations, and other international organisations,” the Ambassador stated.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa fondly recalled his meeting with President Tokayev on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2023. He expressed high regard for Kazakhstan’s achievements in pursuing bold reforms and for the country’s growing stature on the international stage, owing to its peaceful, proactive, and well-balanced foreign policy. The Portuguese Head of State affirmed Lisbon’s readiness to further advance pragmatic bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest and to expand Portugal’s investment presence in Kazakhstan.

In conclusion, President Rebelo de Sousa extended his best wishes to the President of Kazakhstan and conveyed his willingness to hold a high-level meeting in Lisbon in the near future.
