Kazakhstan Participates in the Flag-Raising Ceremony for Syria

New York, 25 April 2025 – A flag-raising ceremony for the new flag of Syria was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The event was attended by Mr. Asaad al-Shaybani, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Syria, Mr. Geir O. Pedersen, the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Permanent Representatives of UN Member States, members of the Syrian civil society in the United States and other high-level guests.

At the invitation of the organizers, H.E. Mr. Kairat Umarov, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the United Nations, participated in the ceremony. Kazakhstan, which consistently pursues a peaceful, balanced, and pragmatic foreign policy, supports the efforts of the international community aimed at establishing lasting peace and ensuring the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of the Syrian Arab Republic in accordance with the UN Charter and the principles of international law.

In a solemn atmosphere, the new Syrian revolutionary flag was raised to applause and cheers, taking its place among the flags of the 193 UN Member States and two observer states.

Speaking to the media, Foreign Minister al-Shaybani stated: «This is a message to the whole world and all free people. This moment we are living through is not only for Syrians, but for all humanity».

Kazakhstan has actively contributed to the peaceful resolution of the Syrian conflict, serving as the initiator and host of the Astana Process, which since 2017 has become an important platform for dialogue between the key parties to the Syrian crisis. Kazakhstan remains committed to supporting efforts aimed at achieving a just and sustainable peace in Syria and strengthening global security.
