New York, March 4, 2025 - The UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution to establish a Regional Center for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Central Asia and Afghanistan. The document was presented by Kazakhstan on behalf of the Central Asian states. 152 member states of the United Nations supported the resolution as co-authors. This, in turn, shows the high importance of the initiative and broad international consensus.
Creation of the UN ODM Center is an important step in the implementation of the initiative of the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, first proposed at the 74th session of the UN General Assembly. It was proposed to place the center on the basis of the new building of international organizations in Almaty, where 18 UN agencies work.
The head of state noted that Kazakhstan, as the largest economy in the region, is interested in strengthening cooperation between states and playing a decisive role in the sustainable development of Central Asia, promoting regional integration.
The growing role of middle powers in global governance shows the importance of Kazakhstan's efforts to ensure sustainable development and stability. Kazakhstan continues to strengthen its role as an important bridge between the world's leading power centers and acts as a catalyst for international cooperation.
At the same time, special attention is paid to the economic development of Afghanistan. The stability and prosperity of the people of this country is directly related to the security and well-being of Central Asia. Kazakhstan constantly supports the Afghan people, facilitates the processes of reconstruction of the country, expansion of trade and economic ties, and integration into regional cooperation. It works closely with governments, international organizations, the private sector and civil society for concrete and accessible results.
Also, the Center will make a significant contribution to the processes of revitalizing the UN system and help increase the effectiveness of the Organization's activities at the regional level. Its work will be aimed at strengthening coordination between UN agencies, adapting global initiatives to regional needs, and developing inclusive multilateral cooperation in line with current UN reforms aimed at increasing its effectiveness.
The adoption of this resolution demonstrates global support for a regional approach to sustainable development and demonstrates the international community's readiness to support Central Asia and Afghanistan's progress towards stability, prosperity and integration into the global development process.
