Geneva, 16 May 2025 – A meeting was held at the headquarters of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) between the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the WTO, Mr. Kairat Torebayev and the WMO Secretary-General, Ms. Celeste Saulo. The parties discussed priority areas of cooperation in the fields of hydrometeorology, disaster early warning systems and sustainable water resource management.

Kazakhstan reaffirmed its interest in continued participation in the CARFFGS project – the Central Asia Regional Flash Flood Guidance System. With the termination of international funding, the continuation of the project is under threat. Therefore, Kazakhstan requested WMO’s support in identifying sustainable mechanisms for the continuation of this system, which has been hosted by Kazhydromet since 2016 as a regional center for Central Asia.

Support was also expressed for the development of multi-hazard early warning systems in the region, with a particular focus on digitalization, capacity building, and adapting alert mechanisms to regional specifics.

Special attention was paid to the issue of water resources. Kazakhstan expressed its willingness to enhance cooperation in the field of hydrological monitoring and sustainable water management, including transboundary water issues.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Kazakhstan invited WMO to take part in the Regional Climate Summit, planned to be held in Astana in 2026, and expressed hope for WMO’s expert support in shaping the agenda and recommendations for the event.

WMO, in turn, highly appreciated Kazakhstan’s commitment to sustainable development and expressed readiness to further strengthen cooperation.
