Kazakhstan Showcases Experience in Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Citizens from Conflict Zones at UN Event in Vienna

Vienna, May 21, 2025 – A side event dedicated to the return, rehabilitation, and reintegration of citizens from armed conflict zones was organized during the 34th session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ).

The event, organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) with the support of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, highlighted the practical experiences of Central Asian countries in conducting humanitarian repatriation operations and implementing comprehensive reintegration programs.

Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Stanislav Vasilenko, opened the event with welcoming remarks. He stressed the importance of international cooperation and the exchange of best practices in addressing the complex challenges of reintegrating citizens returning from conflict zones.

Yernar Mausimbekov, a representative of the Kazakhstani Public Fund “Informational Advocacy and Rehabilitation Center “AQNIET”, spoke about specific measures for working with returned citizens, also sharing in detail the results of practical research conducted among repatriates.

A special feature of the event was the testimony of a Kazakhstani repatriate who returned to Kazakhstan during one of the phases of the humanitarian operation “Jusan”. She recounted her experience living in the conflict zone, her return journey, and the comprehensive support she received from the state, which enabled her successful rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

The event generated significant interest among attendees, who underscored the importance of such initiatives in promoting sustainable peace and security.

Kazakhstan’s experience was also presented at the discussions took place with Elena Kupchina, OSCE Coordinator for Countering Transnational Threats, as well as during meetings at the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with representatives from diplomatic and law enforcement institutions.
