May 31 is the Memorial Day for Victims of Political Repression and Famine. The date has been celebrated in our country since 1997. For 27 years, Kazakhstan has been commemorating the innocent dead on the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repression. In the village of Ayet, flowers were laid in the Youth Park at the memorial stone to the victims of political repression and famine in the 1930s, as well as at the bust of Beimbet Mailin. The event was attended by heads of institutions of the district center and members of the district Council of veterans. Olga Nurgalieva, Head of the Internal Policy Department, and Raisa Ovcharova, Chairman of the District Council of Veterans, spoke at the event. In their speech, they noted the need to remember the tragic events. The participants observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims. In Kazakhstan, from 1921 to 1954, more than 103,000 people were repressed and over 25,000 were shot. Between 2 and 3 million people died of starvation in the 1930s, and more than 1.5 million fled Kazakhstan.
