On July 16, 2025, large-scale sanitary measures were held in Shymkent aimed at improving the environmental situation and increasing the level of comfort of the urban environment. Under the control of the Department of Comfortable Urban Environment, work was organized to water the streets and mechanically clean the road surface. Such measures are especially relevant in the summer, when the level of air dust increases sharply and directly affects the health of city residents.
The work began early in the morning and covered both the central and outlying areas of the city. The main goal was to reduce the amount of dust and pollution that had accumulated on the roadway and roadsides. For this purpose, street cleaners, specialized equipment for garbage collection, and teams of municipal services employees were used.
Particular attention was paid to areas with heavy traffic - central avenues, streets near markets, bus stations and near large residential complexes. These areas have a high concentration of dust, exhaust gases and garbage. The watering of the roads significantly reduced the amount of suspended particles in the air, thereby improving its quality.
According to the organizers, about 20 units of equipment and more than 100 employees of public utilities were involved in the event. As a result of the work, over 30 kilometers of the street and road network were cleared, several dozen tons of garbage were collected, which were subsequently taken to special landfills.
Such events are not new for Shymkent. Over the years, the city has repeatedly held seasonal or unscheduled environmental campaigns. Thus, in the summer of 2023, after several days of a dust storm, city services carried out an unscheduled cleaning of central streets and courtyards, during which the method of watering roads was also used. Then the work continued for several days, and residents noted a significant improvement in air quality.
In the spring of 2024, as part of the traditional citywide clean-up day, a large-scale street cleaning was organized, including washing sidewalks, bus stops, and benches. These events were accompanied by explanatory work on the importance of cleanliness and the role of each resident in maintaining order. However, unlike previous years, the clean-up in July 2025 was more coordinated and comprehensive: all stages - from watering to garbage removal - were carried out sequentially over the course of one day.
A new element in the current campaign is the creation of mobile control groups whose task is to monitor the condition of cleared areas for several days after the work has been completed. These groups record repeated contamination, assess the effectiveness of the measures taken and, if necessary, send equipment again. This approach allows not only to eliminate the consequences of contamination, but also to build a system of preventive work.
The citizens welcomed the initiative. Social networks were filled with many comments expressing gratitude to the utility workers and calling on residents to be more attentive to the cleanliness of the streets. Many note that air pollution is especially noticeable on hot days, and the watering made walking and being outside much more comfortable. This is especially important for children, the elderly, and those who suffer from respiratory diseases.
The Department of Comfortable Urban Environment has already announced its intention to hold such events on a regular basis. It is planned that, depending on weather conditions, the main streets of the city will be watered and cleaned at least once a week. In addition, the possibility of expanding the vehicle fleet is being considered, including the acquisition of small-sized vehicles for narrow streets and sidewalks where heavy equipment cannot pass.
Also in the near future is the development of educational work among the population. It is planned to launch a series of short videos and posters telling about the importance of cleanliness of the city and basic rules of conduct: do not throw garbage on the street, do not leave bags near containers, sort waste, report illegal dumps. The authorities hope that only through joint efforts can they achieve a truly clean and green city.
Thus, the event on July 16 was not just another stage of sanitary cleaning, but a reflection of a systematic approach to environmental issues and urban improvement. The comprehensive nature of the work, the active participation of public utilities and the positive reaction of residents indicate that Shymkent is moving in the right direction - towards a cleaner, safer and more comfortable city.
