On the eve of Abai Day, servicemen of Military Unit 6506, stationed in Shymkent, joined the Decade of Celebrations honoring the great Kazakh poet. Among the guards ensuring the peace of the metropolis are those who have been passionate about Abai's work since childhood. One of them is Private Bakhytzhan Artykbay.

From an early age, Bakhytzhan showed a keen interest in literature and began memorizing Abai Kunanbayev’s poems while still in elementary school. Later, he became the winner of a national competition for reciting Abai's works. Today, he knows more than 50 of the poet's poems by heart.

“Abai’s words are a school of morality and wisdom. In my free time, I reread his poetry, trying to cultivate my inner self. Every poem carries spiritual depth, education, and moral instruction,” says the guardsman.

Another admirer of Abai's legacy serving in the ranks of the National Guard is Private Zhuldyzbek Romashev. He, too, is a prizewinner of a national recitation contest dedicated to Abai’s works. His mother, a teacher of Kazakh language and literature, immersed him in the poet’s world from a young age.

Today, both servicemen contribute not only to military duties but also to the spiritual sphere. By promoting Abai’s heritage among their peers, they recite his poetry and spark interest in the great poet’s words.

This year marks the 180th anniversary of Abai’s birth. In honor of this occasion, National Guard military units across the country are holding themed and poetic evenings.
