All-Seeing Camera Catches Failed Drug Courier at a Prison in Kazakhstan's EKR
In Kazakhstan's East Kazakhstan region (EKR), prison officers and National Guard soldiers thwarted a bold attempt to smuggle drugs into a correctional facility.
The main character of this story is a 44-year-old man who arrived at the prison in a friend's car and left in the company of law enforcement officials.
The courier, a resident of Ust-Kamenogorsk with a prior conviction for theft, arrived in the Shemonaikha district with a clear goal: to throw bundles of marijuana over the prison fence. He later tried to explain his presence at the prison as a "call of nature," but video footage from surveillance cameras showed otherwise.
The most bizarre moment in this story was his arrest. After the man threw the packages over, he rushed to a car, mistakenly thinking it was his own. At that moment, prison staff approached him. The very car he had arrived in then pulled up behind them, which became the final nail in the coffin of his "innocence."
"Prison staff work around the clock. We will not give rest to those who try to violate the regime. We will strictly suppress such cases," said Kuanysh Konzhanov, the head of the Correctional Institution No. 18 of the Committee of the Correctional System of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
During the arrest, three packages tightly wrapped in tape with a specific herbal smell were found and seized. An examination confirmed that the seized substance was dried marijuana weighing more than 430 grams, or 86 single doses.
A pre-trial investigation has been initiated under Article 297, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Ironically, the man who tried to help the inmates now risks joining their ranks. Prison officers are working to determine who the seized items were intended for.
