A republican project was launched as part of the initiative of the Head of State at the National Congress.
The official presentation of the republican project "A Reading Nation" was held in Shymkent as part of the initiative of Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at the National Congress. The event was attended by teachers of universities and colleges, educators, youth, and representatives of the mass media.
This project is being implemented at the initiative of the "Book-Reading Nation" public foundation. The goal of the project is to develop a reading culture in our country, increase the intellectual potential of the nation, and provide citizens of all ages with quality literature.
The project, which has a complex structure, includes six categories:
• School where books are read
• College where you can read books
• University of reading books
• A teacher who reads books
• A civil servant who reads books
• A family that reads books
Each participant must read 15 works from a specially developed list of books in accordance with their category. This list was approved on the basis of the recommendations of a group of experts consisting of representatives of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, scientific institutions and the academic community. The content and volume of the books are selected in accordance with the age and professional orientation of the readers. The shortest work is 120 pages, and the longest is no more than 700 pages. On average, the volume of one book is 300–400 pages.
According to Bekaristan Amanzholov, head of the project's program team, the main feature of the initiative is the allocation of a significant prize fund to encourage reading.
"Kazakhstan is currently ranked low in the world among countries that read books. We aim to improve this indicator and bring our country into the top ten. To do this, we used a financial incentive method aimed at attracting people. The winner of each category was awarded a prize of 1 million tenge," he said.
The total prize fund is 40 million tenge. In each category:
• 1st place winner – 1,000,000 tenge
• 2nd place – 600,000 tenge
• 3rd place – a prize of 400,000 tenge.
Various events will be held within the project:
• for schoolchildren – literary competitions,
• for college and university students – debate tournaments,
• for teachers – quizzes and quizzes,
• for civil servants – discussion meetings on professional literature.
• In the “Reading Family” category – a family of at least five members sets an example by reading books together and discussing works.
Participants will read books between September and February and write a short review of each work. The entire process is monitored through a special online system called "Readination." This platform allows participants to register the books they have read, monitor their ratings, and ensure the fairness of the competition.
The project is being implemented with the support of sponsors. The main sponsor is Alaygom Electric Company, and the main partners include the AMANAT party and local executive bodies.
Currently, the initiative is being implemented as a pilot project in Karaganda, Kostanay regions and Shymkent. In the future, the project is planned to cover the whole of Kazakhstan.
