A Tire Recycling Workshop Opened at a Prison in Ust-Kamenogorsk
In Ust-Kamenogorsk, a new tire recycling workshop has been launched on the premises of Institution No. 17 of the Penal Correction System Committee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Now, inmates will have the opportunity to learn a new profession and produce useful products — one of the components used in rubber tiles and paving blocks.
This project, implemented in partnership with private businesses, not only provides employment for prisoners but also contributes to the region’s environmental efforts by recycling used tires.
The Department of the Penal Correction System for the East Kazakhstan Region emphasized that such enterprises play a key role in the resocialization of inmates.
“Work helps them feel needed and prepares them for life after release,” noted Dastan Sanbayev, Deputy Head of the Penal Correction Department for East Kazakhstan.
As of today, 33 small and medium-sized business entities operate in the industrial zones of the region’s correctional facilities, employing around 55.7% of able-bodied inmates.
The production process in the new workshop is fully operational. Recycled tires are processed into rubber crumb, which is then used to manufacture paving blocks, sidewalk tiles, and surfaces for children's playgrounds and sports areas.
