On September 3, 2025, a new infrastructure project was launched in Shymkent, promising to become one of the city's most striking landmarks. Construction is underway on a musical fountain near Kola Lake, which has the potential to transform this corner of the metropolis into a popular destination for recreation and cultural activities.
The project includes the installation of over a hundred water jets that will shoot jets of water at varying heights in time to musical compositions. The water's movement will be synchronized with the music, and thanks to modern LED systems, the fountain will be transformed into a vibrant light show. The multicolored illumination will create unique visual effects, making this feature a true magnet for both residents and visitors to Shymkent.
Before construction began, extensive cleanup work was carried out on the lake. Water was temporarily diverted to the Koshkarata River, and the lake's inhabitants—fish and other ecosystem members—were relocated to special irrigation ditches filled with spring water. Environmentalists emphasize that residents should have no concerns about the safety of the lake's bioresources: all necessary safety measures have been observed.
According to the city's Department for the Development of a Comfortable Environment, there are currently 86 functioning fountains in Shymkent, located at 65 sites. Of these, 40 are managed by the department, while the rest are operated by other government agencies and private companies. All operate according to a set schedule and undergo regular maintenance.
This year has been particularly fruitful in terms of improvements: 15 new fountains have been commissioned across the city. Three fountains have been added in the Abay district, four in the Al-Farabi district, four in the Karatau district, two in the Turkestan district, and two in the Enbekshin district. These projects are part of a program to create comfortable public spaces designed for residents to relax and enhance the city's tourist appeal.
The musical fountain at Kola Lake will occupy a special place in this chain. Its installation will not only enliven the area but also boost economic activity in the surrounding region. Plans are already being discussed to develop the infrastructure around the lake, including new cafes, walking areas, and bike paths. All of this combined should transform the location into a hub of urban life.
Comparing this project with previous initiatives, it becomes clear that the scale and technical equipment have reached a new level. For example, in 2019, when Shymkent achieved metropolitan status, the city was actively constructing decorative fountains to adorn its squares and parks. These served primarily an aesthetic function and were not designed to host large-scale shows. In 2021–2022, the first fountains with illumination and musical accompaniment were installed, for example, on Arbat Street and in the central parks. However, the current project is distinguished by its scale and modern technological solutions that meet international standards.
The environmental aspect is also important to note. The lakebed cleanup that preceded construction will significantly improve the reservoir's condition. This will have a positive impact not only on its appearance but also on the area's biodiversity. In the future, Kola Lake could become a fully-fledged recreation area with an emphasis on environmental sustainability.
The project's social significance is also significant. Musical fountains are symbols of cities around the world, attracting tourists and creating a festive atmosphere. In Shymkent, where the population already exceeds one million, the emergence of such structures is helping to shape a new urban identity. For young people, this space will become a meeting place, for families, a place for evening strolls, and for tourists, a calling card of the metropolis.
Looking back at past experience, it's clear that such projects have played a significant role in the city's cultural life. For example, the renovation of the fountains in Abay Park in the early 2000s was a true landmark: backlighting was installed for the first time, and residents eagerly flocked to see the renovated water features. Today's projects are a logical continuation and development of those initiatives, but now incorporating the latest technologies.
Symbolically, the launch of the new fountain coincides with the active implementation of the program to create a "city for people," with an emphasis on comfort and quality of life. The musical fountain at Lake Kola will be part of this strategic direction, which aims to improve the urban environment.
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of this year, and Shymkent residents will be able to see the first test runs this winter. In the spring, the facility will be fully operational, becoming one of the city's main attractions.
Thus, the construction of a musical fountain in Shymkent is not just another improvement project, but a multifunctional project combining cultural, social, environmental, and economic significance. It reflects the city's commitment to keeping pace with global trends and creating conditions in which every resident can feel proud of their city.
