From September 1 to 8, 2025, specialists from the science department of the A. Askarov Shymkent State Dendrological Park visited Georgia on a scientific trip. During this trip, they visited the Batumi Botanical Garden and Shekvetili Dendrological Park, exchanged experiences with colleagues, and reached a number of agreements.
First, the Kazakh delegation got acquainted with the famous botanical garden in Batumi. This scientific and cultural center, founded in 1912, is located on the picturesque shores of the Black Sea. The garden, which covers an area of 108 hectares, is home to more than 793 plant species. The Batumi Botanical Garden is internationally renowned as the largest and richest collection in the Caucasus region.
The park contains a collection of rare trees and shrubs of subtropical, tropical and temperate zones. The delegation members got acquainted with the park's scientific laboratories, herbarium collection, introduction experience and methods of propagation of greenery.
The next stage of the trip was a visit to the arboretum in the village of Shekhvetili. This park presents a variety of mainly subtropical plants. Dozens of species of ornamental trees and shrubs are grown here, many of which were brought from all over the world.
In recent years, the Shekhvetili Arboretum has emerged as a scientific and experimental site, expanding international cooperation in the field of plant biology. It was especially useful for Shymkent specialists to get acquainted with the experience of this center.
As a result of the visit, a bilateral memorandum was signed between the Shymkent Dendrological Park and its Georgian counterparts to strengthen scientific cooperation. The document provides for the exchange of plant seeds, the introduction of new species, joint scientific research, and opportunities for internships for young specialists.
This agreement will strengthen not only scientific ties, but also a shared responsibility for the preservation of cultural and natural heritage.
The scientific expedition ended with concrete results:
50 different introduced tree and shrub species were acquired for the Shymkent Arboretum;
About 100 new species have been ordered;
An agreement was made on the mutual exchange of tree and shrub seeds.
Thus, the biological diversity of the park has been raised to a new level, paving the way for the formation of a green area of great visual and scientific value for the city's residents and visitors in the future.
According to experts, such visits will deepen scientific and innovative ties between Kazakhstan and Georgia and allow for the exchange of experience in the field of dendrology. In particular, studying the adaptive features of plants in regions with similar climatic conditions is a common interest.
At the same time, international partnerships contribute to increasing the professional potential of young scientists. They can not only learn from foreign experience, but also participate in the development of joint projects in new scientific areas.
In the future, the Shymkent Arboretum will expand its scientific research activities and continue its practice of adapting introduced plant species to local conditions. It is also planned to participate in international symposiums and seminars.
Newly introduced tree and shrub species will be planted in special sections of the park and subjected to scientific monitoring. The results of this work will contribute to the improvement of the city's ecology in the future and the sustainable development of green spaces.
This visit, which took place from September 1 to 8, was one of the most important events in the history of the Shymkent Dendrological Park. The partnership with the Batumi Botanical Garden and Shekhvetili Dendrological Park will take cooperation in the field of nature conservation and scientific research between the two countries to a new level.
The 50 new plant species obtained as a result of the scientific expedition and hundreds of specimens to be delivered in the future will not only enrich the park's resources, but also make a significant contribution to improving the beauty of the city of Shymkent.
Thus, international experience and scientific exchange are increasing the potential of the local dendrological center and giving impetus to the development of green culture.
