The Department of State Revenue for the Zhetysu region informs about the rules and restrictions on the export of foreign currency in cash across the state border. This publication is intended to ensure compliance with applicable laws and to avoid unintended violations.
In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated March 14, 2022 No. 830, a direct ban has been established on the export of foreign currency in cash and/or monetary instruments in foreign currency if their total amount exceeds the equivalent of 10,000 US dollars.
This restriction was introduced in order to ensure financial stability and protect national interests.
The amount of foreign currency in cash is calculated according to the official exchange rate of the National Bank of the Republic of Kazakhstan effective on the date of export.
The limit of 10,000 US dollars applies to every individual, including minors. In the case of travel with minor children, their funds are taken into account in the declaration of the accompanying adult, while each family member is allowed to export an amount not exceeding the equivalent of 10,000 US dollars.
Violation of the established rules entails liability provided for by the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On Administrative Offenses" (Part 3 of Article 551 of the Administrative Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan) provides for a fine of 25% of the undeclared or unreliably declared amount, as well as their confiscation, for non-declaration or false declaration of cash and/or monetary instruments subject to mandatory declaration.
To avoid possible problems when crossing the border, we strongly recommend checking the exchange rate in advance: Since the limits are calculated at the exchange rate of the National Bank on the day of export, an early check of the official exchange rate will avoid exceeding the established threshold.
To obtain up-to-date information, it is necessary to be guided exclusively by official publications of the state bodies of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
