Kazakhstan–Romania Economic Relations Discussed at the Presidential Administration

Bucharest, September 29, 2025 – At the initiative of the Kazakh side, a meeting was held with the Presidential Adviser on Economic and Social Affairs, Mr. Radu Burnete.

During the conversation, the Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr. Yerlik Ali, provided a detailed briefing on the current state and prospects of Kazakhstan–Romania cooperation in political, trade-economic, investment, and energy sectors.

Special attention was paid to trade and economic cooperation. It was noted that despite geopolitical instability, mutual trade between Kazakhstan and Romania increased in 2024.

Investment cooperation was one of the key topics of the discussion. It was emphasized that Kazakhstan regards Romania as a key partner in Eastern Europe. Particular focus was placed on the activities of KMG International N.V. (Rompetrol), which has been successfully operating in Romania for nearly two decades, and is one of the country’s largest taxpayers and a strategic investor in the oil refining industry.

During the meeting, Rompetrol CEO Eric Sagiyev presented a number of initiatives aimed at further expanding energy cooperation. The Kazakh side expressed hope for the support of the Romanian official in the implementation of these projects.

Following the negotiations, both parties confirmed their mutual commitment to strengthening the partnership and unlocking the full potential of bilateral relations.

For reference:The trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Romania in 2024 amounted to USD 2.92 billion, which is 1.74% higher than the figure for 2023.
