Environmental Issues in Central Asia Discussed at UN Forum

On October 7-8, Conference on "Strengthening Interregional Cooperation to Combat Sand and Dust Storms" was held in Beirut. It was organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia (ESCWA), the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and the Government of Sweden. Representatives of government agencies, international and regional organizations, academic institutions, and the private sector from Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Africa participated. In his presentation, Kazakhstan's Ambassador to Lebanon, Rasul Jumaly, shared the experience of Central Asian countries, including Kazakhstan, in combating desertification and land degradation, and presented programs being implemented in this sensitive area. Among these, special attention was paid to projects to restore the Northern Aral Sea, reforestation, and enhance ecosystem resilience, as well as the need for international support in combating such problems, which have global significance.
