Title: "I will mend my ways": Husband who beat his wife got a second chance, but traded a broom for the threat of jail in EKR

A resident of the East Kazakhstan Region paid for the battery with 40 hours of community service and received a second chance from his wife. However, he is now facing a real prison sentence: the man refused to sweep the streets, claiming he was ashamed in front of his acquaintances.

The family conflict, which started with a simple quarrel, escalated into physical violence: the 38-year-old city resident hit his wife in the face. The court recognized the fact of the criminal offense and assigned 40 hours of compulsory work – cleaning the streets of Ust-Kamenogorsk.

"The convicted person was sent to perform community work. Given the autumn period, his task is to clean the territory and clear the streets of fallen leaves. He works 4 hours a day," reported Aigerim Nurgazina, a representative of the press service of the Penitentiary Department for the EKR. "This is an opportunity for the person to realize their mistake and benefit society."

The person on probation admitted that he would try to mend his ways, control his emotions, and would not raise a hand against his wife. The wife, in turn, confirmed that she gave him a second attempt to fix their family life.

However, the noble intention did not last long. The man, who is under strict control of the probation service staff in Ust-Kamenogorsk, categorically refused to perform the punishment assigned by the court. He motivated his refusal quite unusually: he is ashamed to hold a broom in his hands – in case acquaintances or friends see him.

Such a "principle" can cost the offender dearly. Probation service staff warn: evasion of work will lead to a stricter punishment.

"The punishment in the form of community service is not a resort. Our task is to ensure that every hour assigned by the court is honestly worked off," Aigerim Nurgazina explained. "If a person starts to evade, we will immediately send the materials to the court to replace the punishment with a stricter one – up to imprisonment."

Thus, the man, who received a second chance from both his wife and the court, risks trading cleaning autumn leaves for a prison term.
