Kazakhstan-Germany Strategic Water Partnership: A New Stage of Practical Solutions

Berlin, November 11, 2025The Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the Federal Republic of Germany hosted a Roundtable on “Kazakhstan-Germany Strategic Water Partnership: A New Level,” organized jointly with the German Water Partnership. The event gathered representatives of government agencies, research institutions and business circles from both countries.

The Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Germany, Nurlan Onzhanov, emphasized that Kazakhstan and Germany are bound by long-term and mutually beneficial cooperation in the fields of sustainable development, green technologies, and water management. According to his remarks, the partnership between the two countries is reaching a new level of systemic solutions, joint projects, and technological exchange.

The Kazakh diplomat expressed gratitude to the Federal Government,
Federal Foreign Office and GIZ for their Green Central Asia initiative and for supporting climate-related projects in the region. The Regional Strategy for Climate Change Adaptation adopted under this initiative has become a solid foundation for further cooperation.

The Managing Director of German Water Partnership Mr. Boris Greifeneder highly appreciated the open dialogue and expressed his readiness to work jointly on sustainable solutions in the fields of water resources, sustainable development and climate adaptation. The association is committed to further strengthening cooperation between the countries by uniting expertise, technologies and innovations to achieve common goals of sustainable development.

High appreciation was given to the ongoing water sector reforms in Kazakhstan, including the adoption of the new Water Code, the restoration of the National Hydrogeological Service, the launch of the Digital Water Cadaster,
the creation of the National Water Resources Information System and plans for the modernization of reservoirs, sewage and irrigation systems.

During the panel discussions, participants discussed prospects for cooperation in water management, sustainable development and public utilities, as well as Kazakhstan’s initiative to establish a Kazakh-German Innovative Water Hub.
This hub is envisioned as a platform for technology exchange, digital solutions and pilot project development.

Following the round table, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the strategic water partnership between Kazakhstan and Germany
and agreed to explore the creation of the innovative water hub and to promote joint initiatives, pilot projects in water management, sustainable development
and municipal infrastructure.

Today, the water partnership between Kazakhstan and Germany is more than an exchange of experience - it is a strategic choice that reflects a shared understanding that water is a key factor for sustainable development,
economic growth and future security.
