“Zhas Burkit”: How the National Guard’s Military-Patriotic Club Is Transforming the School Environment

The “Zhas Burkit” military-patriotic club of the National Guard of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan demonstrates in practice that systematic work with teenagers yields tangible social results. One clear example is Secondary School No. 6 of the Buryl rural district in the Baizak District of the Zhambyl Region, where no offenses among students have been recorded over the past three years.
This result became possible after the signing of a cooperation memorandum in 2023 between the school and military unit 5513 of the “Oñtüstik” Regional Command of the National Guard of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The school operates a modern initial military training classroom equipped as a command-and-tactical post, as well as a kind of “militarized TikTok house.” Club members actively manage social media accounts, produce video clips and podcasts on patriotic themes, attract their peers to club activities, and help shape a positive school environment.
This creative approach received high recognition. The “Zhas Burkit” military-patriotic club became the winner of a grant from the Akim of the Zhambyl Region, receiving 1 million tenge to further develop the project.
An important role in the club’s activities is played by the initial military training teacher, reserve captain Samat Kerimzhanov, as well as the school administration, which consistently supports the military-patriotic direction. With the participation of National Guard officers, practical training sessions and meetings are regularly held for schoolchildren, where they not only master the basics of military affairs but also learn firsthand about service, forming a conscious interest in the profession of defending the Motherland.
The results are also reflected in the future choices of graduates. Each year, students of the school enroll in military higher education institutions, including the Academy of the National Guard, where two cadets — former members of the “Zhas Burkit” club — are currently studying.
It is worth noting that the development of the “Zhas Burkit” movement is large-scale. Today, 31 military-patriotic clubs operate on the territories of National Guard military units. In 42 schools and one college under the patronage of the National Guard, 70 “Zhas Burkit” classes are functioning. More than 1,400 students study under joint programs that include the basics of military training. In total, over 500 military-patriotic events have been held.
The joint work of Secondary School No. 6 of the Baizak District and the National Guard demonstrates how systematic patriotic education contributes to the formation of disciplined, responsible, and active youth.
