A 38-year-old resident of Semey was serving a sentence in a medium-security institution for committing theft for a period of two years and six months.
Upon arrival at the facility, he informed the staff that he was married and had three minor children: two sons aged 13 and 10, as well as an 8-year-old daughter. He and his wife have been married for more than 16 years.
While serving his sentence, the man learned that due to alcohol abuse and an antisocial lifestyle, his wife was deprived of parental rights, and the children were temporarily placed in the care of his 74-year-old mother. Despite the current situation, the convict kept in touch with the children throughout the time, provided them with financial assistance and did not lose hope of returning to them in order to personally deal with their upbringing and family restoration.
Due to changes in the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the convicted person was granted a one-year delay in serving his sentence.
This provision of the law is aimed at preserving the family and socializing convicts, allowing the parent to return to the children, participate in their lives, upbringing and provision.
In this case, it is thanks to these changes that a real opportunity for family reunification has appeared — the children are waiting for their father, and he, in turn, is ready to take full responsibility for their future.
To control his behavior, the convict was registered with the probation service of the Auezovsky district. The staff of the service provides him with support in the process of social adaptation and return to a full-fledged family life.
— I always knew that my children were waiting for me. All this time, I tried to take care of them in any way I could, even in a difficult situation. Now I work in one of the city's LLP companies, and I use part of my salary to buy clothes, groceries, and pay for housing for my children. I want to return to them, be by their side every day, educate them, and never make mistakes again. For me, this is not just a reprieve, it's a chance to bring my family and myself back," the convict shared.
— Changes in legislation allow for a more humanistic approach. In such situations, priority is given to the interests of the children and the preservation of the family. We see that the convict is motivated to correct himself, so our task is to accompany his socialization process and help him embark on a stable law—abiding path," said Kuanysh Turarkanov, deputy head of the probation service of the Auezovsky district.
