Construction, transport and manufacturing industries became the drivers of economic growth in the first quarter

First Vice Minister of National Economy Azamat Amrin reported on the results of the country's development in January-March 2026 at a Government meeting. According to the data provided, real GDP growth was 3%.

"The peculiarity of this year is that due to the prevailing circumstances, the economy is growing without the oil sector," Azamat Amrin stressed.

Growth in the real sector was 2.1%, and in the service sector – 3.7%. The construction, transport and manufacturing industries demonstrate the highest dynamics.

Investments in fixed assets increased by 6.4%, amounting to 3.5 trillion tenge. At the same time, private investment increased by 20.9%. Significant capital inflows were recorded in the supply of electricity and gas (2.5 times), information communications (2 times) and agriculture (+70.6%). High investment growth is noted in Zhambyl, Turkestan, Almaty, East Kazakhstan regions, Ulytau region. 

The foreign trade turnover in January-February reached $21.7 billion. Exports of goods amounted to $12 billion, including exports of processed goods – $4.5 billion. Imports of goods amounted to $9.6 billion. The trade balance exceeded $2.4 billion.

In the manufacturing industry, growth accelerated to 8.5%. Positive dynamics was noted in 18 regions. Azamat Amrin noted qualitative changes in the structure of the economy: the share of the manufacturing sector (12.7%) exceeds the share of the mining industry for the second year in a row. The share of the oil sector in GDP has more than halved, from 16.5% in 2010 to 8.1% in 2024.

"To ensure sustainable development, it is important to continue focusing on further economic diversification, which will allow us to get out of the middle income trap," the First Vice Minister added.

In terms of manufacturing industries, growth was driven by mechanical engineering (+21.9%), pharmaceuticals (+46%), metal products (+39.3%) and building materials (+37.1%).

The construction sector showed an increase of 14.8%. 3.9 million square meters were put into operation. m housing. The best indicators for housing commissioning are demonstrated by the regions of Abai, Ulytau and Karaganda region and Shymkent.

According to the results of the first quarter, growth was noted in 8 regions, including Astana, Almaty, Turkestan and Zhambyl regions, according to all 7 main indicators.
