Brussels, April 29, 2026 – Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the European Union Roman Vassilenko took part in a roundtable discussion titled “Sustainable Middle Corridor: From Strategic Coordination to Bankable Implementation”. The event was held at the European Institute for Asian Studies with the support of the “Kazakhstan – EU Gateway” Platform and the FERRMED rail transportation association.
Among the participants were senior officials from the Directorate-General for International Partnerships of the European Commission, members of the European Parliament, representatives of several industry organizations (including the International Road Transport Union, European Shippers Council, and Transport Management Consultants and Surveyors (TMCS)), as well as the logistics companies from Kazakhstan (Kedentransservice JSC) and Germany (Rhenus Group).
The participants discussed the application of green technologies and digital tools in the development of infrastructure and the improvement of trade and financial operations along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, also known as the “Middle Corridor”.
In his remarks, Roman Vassilenko emphasized that Kazakhstan views the development of the “Middle Corridor” as one of the key priorities for strengthening connectivity between Europe and Asia, diversifying its economy, and deepening cooperation with the European Union. Particular attention is being paid to “green logistics” – decarbonization of transport, the electrification of railways, the digitalization of processes, and the development of climate-resilient infrastructure.
The Kazakh diplomat cited several examples, including the construction of the new “Moiynty – Kyzylzhar” railway line, which will shorten the route by 150 km, reducing transit time, energy consumption, and emissions. Kazakhstan has also, together with Azerbaijan and Georgia, established a joint venture – “Middle Corridor Multimodal Ltd” to coordinate freight operations and implement digital solutions.
Kazakhstan’s Ambassador noted that particular importance is attached to the development of a “green corridor” for the supply of clean energy to Europe, recalling that Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan have already signed an agreement on a strategic partnership on the production and transmission of green energy from Central Asia to Europe via the South Caucasus.
Overall, amid an increasingly tense geopolitical environment, the roundtable’s participants expressed a shared view on the importance of the stable and efficient development of the “Middle Corridor”, which contributes to deepening the strategic partnership between the European Union and Kazakhstan, as well as Central Asia as a whole.
