28 April 2026, Vienna — Mukhtar Tileuberdi, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the international organizations in Vienna, took part in the inaugural meeting of the “Group of Friends of the Global Governance Initiative.”

The event brought together the heads of international organizations accredited in Vienna, including UNIDO, IAEA, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), and UNCITRAL, as well as Permanent representatives of countries that supported the initiative.

The Global Governance Initiative was announced by the President of the People’s Republic of China in September 2025 at the meeting of the heads of state of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. It aims to enhance the effectiveness of the United Nations and international institutions by promoting the fundamental principles of multilateral diplomacy, including the sovereign equality of states and adherence to the rule of international law.

In his remarks, the Ambassador of Kazakhstan expressed gratitude to the Chinese side for the invitation to join the Group of Friends of the Global Governance Initiative on the Vienna platform. He emphasized that President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev was the first foreign head of state to support the initiative of Chinese President Xi Jinping during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

The Ambassador also noted that the initiative aligns with Kazakhstan’s proposal to restore the principle of sovereign equality of member states within the IAEA and proposed to continue discussions on improving the Agency’s governance system within the framework of Kazakhstan’s agenda item at the IAEA Board of Governors.

Participants of the meeting expressed support for China’s initiative aimed at strengthening a system of international relations based on equality, the rule of law, and mutual respect for interests, and agreed to join efforts to promote it on the Vienna platform.
