Geneva, 2 June 2026. Against the backdrop of ongoing armed conflicts around the world, the Permanent Representatives of Kazakhstan, Brazil, China, France, Jordan and South Africa, together with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, held a joint briefing in Geneva on the Global Initiative to Galvanize Political Commitment to International Humanitarian Law.

The briefing was dedicated to preparations for the High-Level Conference “Humanity in War”, to be held in Jordan on 7 December 2026, as well as to the further promotion of the Initiative aimed at strengthening compliance with international humanitarian law in the context of contemporary armed conflicts.

During the event, representatives of the six founding States of the Global Initiative emphasized the need for the international community to maintain a firm commitment to the norms of international humanitarian law, ensure the protection of civilians and strengthen political support for humanitarian principles.

Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, Erzhan Kazykhan, noted that Kazakhstan, as one of the founding States of the Initiative, consistently advocates for strengthening multilateral cooperation in the humanitarian sphere and promoting practical measures aimed at ensuring more effective compliance with international humanitarian law.

Participants of the briefing were encouraged to take an active part in the upcoming High-Level Conference and in the further implementation of the Global Initiative.

Background: The Global Initiative to Galvanize Political Commitment to International Humanitarian Law was launched in September 2024 at the initiative of Kazakhstan, Brazil, China, France, Jordan and South Africa, together with the International Committee of the Red Cross. To date, 111 States from all regions of the world have joined the Initiative, confirming broad international interest in strengthening respect for and compliance with the norms of international humanitarian law.
