An exhibition showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Kazakh people officially opened today at the Shanghai History Museum.
The exhibition is organized by the Almaty Museum Association with the support of the Consulate General of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Shanghai, the Akimat of Almaty, and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. Initiatives of this kind form an important part of Kazakhstan's cultural diplomacy and its ongoing efforts to promote it's historical and cultural heritage on the international stage.
The exhibition is being held at the Shanghai History Museum, one of China's leading museum institutions, which welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world each year. Through a carefully curated collection of unique museum artifacts, the exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to explore Kazakhstan's centuries-old traditions, spiritual values, and distinctive cultural identity, highlighting the enduring legacy of the Great Steppe.
The exhibition was made possible following the establishment of sister-city relations between Almaty and Shanghai in June 2025. An important milestone in strengthening bilateral cooperation was the official visit of Almaty Akim Darkhan Satybaldy to Shanghai in November 2025, followed by the reciprocal visit of Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng to Almaty in April 2026.
Building on this momentum, the Almaty Museum Association and the Shanghai History Museum signed a Memorandum of Cooperation, under which this exhibition was organized. The exhibition stands as another symbol of the growing cultural dialogue and partnership between Kazakhstan and China.
This exhibition represents a tangible step toward strengthening friendship and cultural exchange between the two metropolitan cities. It provides Chinese audiences with an opportunity to gain deeper insight into Kazakhstan's rich history, cultural traditions, and national heritage.
The exhibition features approximately 100 unique artifacts from the collections of Almaty's museums, showcasing the rich historical and ethnographic heritage of the Kazakh people. In recent years, collections from the Almaty Museum Association have been exhibited in numerous cities across Europe and Asia, further expanding international cultural cooperation.
The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the P.R.China, the Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office, the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, members of the diplomatic corps, as well as residents and visitors of Shanghai.
The exhibition will remain open to the public until August 30, 2026.
