Budapest, September 9, 2026 – During the meeting between the Ambassador-Designate of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Hungary, A.Bakytbekkyzy, and the Mayor of Debrecen, L.Papp, the prospects for further development of inter-municipal cooperation between Kazakhstan and Hungary were discussed, with particular attention given to establishing closer ties between the cities of Shymkent and Debrecen.

Noting the strong potential for cooperation between the two cities, the sides expressed interest in strengthening direct contacts and developing practical cooperation in the areas of economy, investment, urban infrastructure, water resources management, transport, education, culture and tourism.

Particular attention was paid to the upcoming first visit of a Debrecen delegation headed by Mayor L.Papp to Shymkent. It was noted that the visit would represent an important step towards strengthening relations between the two cities and provide an opportunity to identify concrete areas for further cooperation aimed at implementing joint initiatives and expanding contacts between municipal authorities, business communities, educational institutions and public organizations of the two cities.

The meeting also focused on Debrecen's experience in attracting major international investments and developing the city's industrial potential. The Kazakh side expressed interest in studying Debrecen's practices in creating a favorable environment for investors, providing the necessary infrastructure, developing a skilled workforce and fostering an industrial ecosystem. The sides expressed their readiness to exchange experience and facilitate the establishment of direct contacts between business representatives of the two countries.

Views on effective water resources management were also exchanged. The importance of Debrecen's experience in ensuring sustainable water supply and managing water resources amid growing urban and industrial demand was emphasized. The Kazakh side expressed interest in practical exchange of experience and in studying the solutions implemented by the city in this area.

The parties discussed prospects for expanding cooperation in the field of education. The important role of the University of Debrecen was highlighted, and it was proposed to step up cooperation with Kazakh higher education institutions through academic and student exchanges, as well as joint educational and research programs. The possibility of increasing the number of Kazakh students studying in Debrecen was also noted.

Debrecen plays an important role in Hungary's economy, serving as the largest economic and industrial center in the eastern part of the country and one of its most dynamically developing cities. Thanks to its advantageous geographic location, well-developed infrastructure, strong educational and human capital, as well as a consistent policy of attracting foreign investment, the city has developed a modern industrial base and become a platform for major international investment projects. Debrecen also plays a significant role in the development of logistics, high-tech manufacturing, the automotive industry and other sectors of Hungary's economy.
