A sewing workshop for sewing children's bedding for orphanages, boarding schools and baby homes has started operating in the maximum security institution of the UIS in the Abai region. To date, about five convicts work in the workshop, but in the near future it is planned to additionally employ about 15 more people.
Despite the fact that the production was launched only a few days ago, the sewing workshop has already received a large order for the manufacture of thousands of sets of baby bedding. It includes sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers. The first order will be sent to an orphanage in Almaty.
The pay of convicts is piecework. On average, one worker makes more than ten sets per day. The wages received are used to pay off court-ordered claims, as well as to provide assistance to families.
Working in the workshop gives convicts the opportunity not only to receive official earnings, but also to master a sought-after profession, acquire practical skills and prepare for life after release. In the future, it is planned to expand production and launch a line for sewing women's clothing.
        - Working in a sewing workshop is of special importance to him. I am glad that I work here. It so happens that my two minor children are currently in an orphanage. When I complete another order, I imagine that I am sewing for my child, so I put my whole soul into the work. For me, this is an opportunity to be useful to children and feel responsible to them," the convict shared.
         - The development of production activities contributes to the social adaptation of convicts. Our task is to create conditions under which convicts can acquire work skills, acquire a profession and prepare for their return to society. Work disciplines, forms responsibility and helps a person to reconsider life values. In the future, we plan to expand production and create additional jobs. Such projects help convicts acquire useful skills, increase their level of social responsibility and adapt more successfully to life after their release," said Aydin Kalelov, acting head of the institution.
