In the secondary security facility of the penitentiary in the Abai region, convicts employed in the workshop of applied arts and woodworking began manufacturing modular houses for temporary housing of farm workers and construction crews. Such structures are more often referred to as cabins or construction trailers in everyday life.

           The first residential module was custom-made by one of the farms in the Almaty region. Five convicts with practical skills and experience in construction and woodworking took part in the implementation of the project.

          The house includes all the necessary facilities for temporary accommodation: a living room, a shower room and a sanitary unit. High-quality building materials are used in the manufacture, as well as requirements for reliability and ease of use. The average production time of one such module is about one month.

          -Participation in the production process allows not only to get stable employment, but also to improve professional skills that will be useful after release. I had already worked in the construction industry before, so I was happy to join this work. Here we don't just fulfill an order — we create products in demand, learn responsibility and teamwork. For me, this is an opportunity to preserve and develop professional skills so that after my release I can adapt faster and find a job," the convict shared.

          - The development of production activities in correctional institutions is an important part of the social adaptation of convicts. The main task of convicts' employment is not only the organization of their working hours, but also the formation of their work skills, discipline and responsibility. Today, conditions are being created in the institution that allow convicts to master sought-after professions and apply existing experience in practice. The production of such modular houses demonstrates that the products can be competitive and in demand in the market," said Serik Zhangaskanov, Deputy head of the institution.
