Production is expanding in the maximum security facility of the UIS in the Abai region. A new direction has been launched in the furniture assembly and joinery workshop — the production of chairs for cafes and restaurants.

Despite the fact that the workshop has been operating for only a few months, its products are already in demand. Orders have been received from the cities of Almaty and Astana for the manufacture of chairs for cafes and restaurants.

On average, 700-800 chairs are made here per month. In addition, the workshop produces up to 1,000 items of national tableware and about 100 jewelry storage boxes.

Today, about 90 convicts work in the production hall. In the future, it is planned to increase the number of jobs to 150 people.

The remuneration of convicts is piecework and directly depends on the amount of work performed. The earned funds are used to repay the claims established by the court, and also allow convicts to provide financial assistance to their families and loved ones.

             — I am 43 years old, I am a resident of Almaty. Three years ago, I was sentenced to five years in prison for theft. I am currently working in a production workshop. It is important to me that being here, I can work, earn money and help my family. My wife and three minor children are waiting for me at home. I try to work hard to support my loved ones. After my release, I want to return to my family, work and start my life anew," the convict shared.

           — Today, the institution has four sole proprietors and two LLP companies. There are woodworking, sewing and furniture workshops, a beverage production workshop, as well as a new laundry soap production workshop. Despite the fact that the new production facility has been operating for only a few months, it has already managed to attract orders from Almaty and Astana. This shows the demand for manufactured products. We strive to expand production and create more jobs for convicts. This gives them the opportunity to gain work skills, have a stable income, and provide financial support to their families. In the future, we plan to increase the number of employed convicts to 150 people," said Yerkin Isabekov, head of the Department of Labor Organization of convicts.
