September 28 marks the 65th anniversary of the first issue of Qalqan, the newspaper of the law and order troops. The publication was first launched in 1961 under the name Na Boyevom Postu. Today, the editorial team publishes both a newspaper and a magazine, as well as producing various video projects.

Over the years, the publication was issued under the names Dzerzhinets and Qalqan–Shchit, before eventually becoming known as Qalqan. Its correspondents cover events in National Guard military units, report on the service of soldiers and officers, and tell stories about the achievements and acts of bravery of servicemen.

The editorial team’s work extends beyond a single city. Regional press services regularly provide materials about the daily life of military units. This enables the newspaper to cover the activities of the National Guard across all regions of the country.

Over its 65-year history, the newspaper’s format, circulation and publication frequency have changed along with its name. Printing capabilities have expanded and the publication’s design has been updated. Today, Qalqan is published twice a month with a circulation of more than 1,000 copies.

As the editorial team’s activities expanded, new projects were launched. In 2004, the Burkit magazine began publication, followed in 2010 by the educational and methodological collection Ulttyq Ulan Zharshysy. The editorial team has also produced a number of books dedicated to the service and combat activities of National Guard servicemen.

In 2010, a video studio was established within the editorial office. Using modern filming and editing equipment, the studio produces documentaries and short videos. Readers can scan a QR code on the pages of the newspaper and watch a video related to the published article on their smartphones.

Today, Qalqan continues to tell the story of service and events in National Guard military units through several formats — on the pages of the print publication and through modern video projects.
