The contribution of SMEs to the development of the economy of Almaty may amount to 60% by the end of this year

Small and medium-sized businesses form the basis of the economy of Almaty. It is expected that its contribution to the development of the urban economy will amount to 60% in 2024. This was announced by the mayor of the megalopolis Yerbolat Dosayev during the session of the city maslikhat, at which the city budget for 2025-2027 was adopted.
"Today, about 942 thousand Almaty residents are employed in the small and medium-sized business sector, which is more than 85% of the total number of people employed in the city. Up to 80% of the permanent jobs created in the city are accounted for by SMEs," Yerbolat Dosayev said.
According to him, 53.1 billion tenge was allocated from the budget this year to support and develop SMEs. These funds are aimed at subsidizing, guaranteeing and lending to businesses, which allowed to support 1.8 thousand new projects totaling 125.3 billion tenge.
In 2025, financing to support SMEs is planned to increase to 71 billion tenge. This will provide an opportunity to support the development of more than 4 thousand small and medium-sized businesses.
These measures will help to increase the contribution of SMEs to 75% by 2030, strengthening the position of Almaty as the economic center of our country, the mayor of the city summed up.
It should be noted that for 2025, the budget of the city of Almaty amounted to 2 trillion 177 billion tenge. This is 2 times more than at the beginning of 2022, when the budget was 1 trillion 70 billion tenge. The budget remains socially oriented. Social spending increased by 15%, or 110.6 billion tenge to 851.9 billion tenge, which is almost 40% of total budget expenditures.
