The tourism industry in Almaty is showing impressive growth. This was reported during the session of the Maslikhat of Almaty, at which the city's budget for 2025-2027 was adopted.
According to the Bureau of National Statistics of the Republic of Kazakhstan, from January to September of this year, the number of tourists in Almaty increased by 14.2%, reaching 1,729.6 thousand people, including the number of foreign tourists increased by 24%, amounting to 507.6 thousand, and the number of domestic tourists increased by 10.6%, reaching 1,222 thousand people.
Almaty's share in the total flow of tourists in Kazakhstan amounted to 25%, which confirms its status as a key tourist center of the country. At the same time, the leaders in visiting Almaty are tourists from Russia (117,534 tourists, a share of 23.2%), India (82,731 tourists, a share of 16.3%), China (73,328 tourists, a share of 14.45%), Turkey (26,273 tourists, a share of 5.2%), the USA (21,561 tourists, a share of 4.25%), South Korea (15,775 tourists, 3.11% share).
The active development of the tourism industry was accompanied by a significant increase in investments. For 10 months of 2024, the volume of investments in infrastructure improvement, creation of new facilities and improvement of service quality amounted to 86.6 billion tenge, which is 29.3% higher than last year. Tax revenues from the tourism sector increased by 2 times to 76.9 billion tenge.
International recognition has also played an important role in strengthening the city's tourist image. Almaty took the 25th place in the ranking of the best tourist destinations in the world according to The New York Times. The British magazine Wanderlust has included Kazakhstan, focusing on Almaty, in the top 24 places to visit in 2024.
These achievements contributed to a 2.4-fold increase in ad campaign impressions, increasing their reach to 300 million accounts.
At international tourism exhibitions, Almaty signed 230 memoranda with foreign tour operators, which will ensure the influx of more than 190 thousand tourists in the next three years. The expected economic effect will be $285 million (with an average check of $1,500).
It should be noted that studies such as "Portrait of a Tourist" have highlighted the strategic focus on attracting high-quality foreign tourists, whose average check is 8.7 times higher than the expenses of domestic travelers. To achieve this goal, the focus will be increased on 11 target markets, including China, Turkey, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Italy, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Singapore. Tourists from these countries have a high level of travel expenses — from 750 to 1,500 US dollars, which makes them an important audience for the development of tourism in Almaty.
