The capital's Zhaksylyk Ushkempirov Martial Arts Palace hosted the opening ceremony of the World Championship in sports and combat sambo among adults.
The large-scale event is taking place in Kazakhstan for the second time and brought together about 470 athletes from 80 countries of the world. The honor of the country at the world championship is defended by 28 Kazakhstani athletes.
The opening ceremony was attended by Vice Minister of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan Serik Zharasbayev, who wished success to the athletes.
"Holding the World Cup in our capital after 19 years is a special event and a great honor for Kazakhstan. The strong traditions of the Kazakh SAMBO school make it natural to hold this championship here. I am sure that this event will contribute to the further development of youth's interest in SAMBO," the Vice Minister said.
A special feature of this year's championship was the first included combat sambo competition among women and a tournament for athletes with visual impairment. Until November 10, 31 sets of awards will be awarded at the World Championship.
It should be noted that the first SAMBO World Championship in Kazakhstan was held in 2005 in Astana, where Kazakhstani athletes won 1 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze medals.
